1901

Present Owners:
Rene Vellanoweth and Leslie Heald

Original Owner:  Louis P. D’Aoust

Architectural Notes:  This house began life as a small settlement era Greek Revival residence.  A 1901 addition transformed it into a Queen Anne.  The house has been remodeled more than once, and one misdirected effort resulted in the removal of all the fan brackets.  Measured drawings of these were made from a nearly identical house up C Street, and they were replicated for the former owners, Susan Fox and David Thewlis, and installed by the new owners earlier this year.  Note the pediment bay and double course of dentils, the principal ornaments of this distinctive home that has been featured in recent Times-Standard publications of Restore and Preserve.

Notable Features:  From the backyard you can identify the 1870 eave returns.  The old foundation is a remnant of the Cottage Garden Nursery Greenhouse on the north side of the property with window openings.  On the south side is a two-story Classical sunroom added in the 1910's.

Historical Notes:  In 1900 Louis P. D’Aoust purchased the property and soon built the Queen Anne addition.  In 1913 Charles Willis Ward bought the property.  He was a nurseryman from New Jersey and wished to take advantage of the coastal climate.  Ward founded the Cottage Garden Nursery, which was located off Myrtle Avenue. He used the C Street property to experiment with new varieties of flowers and plants.  Charles C. Ward was the president of the Ward Perkins Gill Company and Cottage Garden Nurseries. He was the vice-president of C.E. Gill
