 1926

Present Owners:
Alfred Tix and Danny Furlong

Original Owner:  Gustav Weber

Architectural Notes:  Designed in Spanish Colonial Revival, reflected by the sloping tile roof, the house offsets a variety of arched window openings with a central “adobe” block.  Spanish Colonial was one of the revival styles popular in the 1920s.  This dwelling has solid redwood walls with 2x4s laid diagonally for strength.

Notable Features:  Observe the original terra cotta roof, mahogany flooring and interior trim in Brazilian gumwood.  Very special are four barrel vaulted ceilings 8 to 12 feet high, one in a nearly original bathroom.

Historical Notes:  While originally built for Gustav Weber, it was sold within a year due to financial problems to Fred and Jessie Barnum, who owned it from 1927 to 1965.  Fred, at first, was a surveyor for the port and agent for the Bayside Steamship Company and later president of F. B. Barnum, Inc.  Later it became the home of Dr. Michael and Kathrin Burleson who then sold it to the present owners.  The daughter of Fred and Jessie Barnum, Rene Barnum Steel, claims her parents bought the house for $5,000.

This exquisite Spanish-style home is indicative of Eureka’s varying architecture in the Buhne Terrace neighborhood.  It was featured during the 1986 Eureka Heritage Society Christmas Home Tour.
