Eureka Discovery Museum

The Eureka Discovery Museum celebrated its grand "re-opening" on March 3, 2001.  A long line of parents and youngsters snaked around the Carson Block waiting to get into the museum; located in the Carson Block building on the corner of 3rd and F Streets.  One of the exhibits was an educational model of the Carson Block done by the Education Committee of the Eureka Heritage Society.  Under the able leadership of the Committee Chair, Elizabeth Thompson, this project was to build a scale model of the Carson Block, bounded by 2nd and 3rd streets, and F and G Streets.  Built to a scale of one inch equals ten feet, the model buildings were constructed of hardwood, decorated with actual photos of the building, and painted with historic milk paint.

The overall model was designed by Kay Goddard.  Art and Betty Otto did the construction of the buildings.  Ron and Melanie Kuhnel took the photos, laminated them on the buildings, and did the painting.  Elizabeth and Walt Thompson prepared the history of each building, which was then glued to the bottom of the models.

Below are photos of the model building development and construction, as well as the finished models at the Discovery Museum.
