Blue Ox
The blue ox Millworks is housed in a turn-of-century building, formerly
occupied by the North American Power Company that provided electricity for
early Eureka's trolley cars. Ironically, electricity is not used at
the authentic Victorian sawmill to operate some of their equipment that
dates from the mid-1800s. The same hand operated machinery equipment
and techniques that produced ornate gingerbread, appliques, and moldings
for yesterday's Victorians houses are being used today to create custom
millwork for clients, with an emphasis on the Victorian era.
Eric and Viviana Hollenbeck, owners of the Blue Ox, founded the School
of Traditional Arts in 1991. In 1999 the Hollenbeck's Community
School program became an official campus for Humboldt County's at-risk
youth. These students will provide demonstrations during the tour.
